The Suffolk coast is a very special place and nowhere more so than the coastal parishes of Bawdsey, Alderton, Hollesley and Boyton. Many very unusual species and habitats can be found here and not just in nature reserves – there are exciting discoveries to be made in gardens, around villages and just about anywhere.
Groundwork has been given a grant from the Suffolk Secrets AONB Fund to show local residents and visitors some of that wonderful wildlife. Working in partnership with organisations such as Suffolk Wildlife Trust, the RSPB and the Environment Agency, along with many other groups and individuals, there will be a programme of activities throughout the year and across the four parishes, in the hope that there will be something that engages the interest of as many people as possible. That will include a series of talks, events, surveys and other activities, and cover a whole range of wildlife interest, as well as simple surveys to see how well Turtle Doves are doing in the area and how widespread Ant Lions are.
The first couple of events are as follows:
- 9 April – a morning walk with Bawdsey Bird Club. Meet at East Lane at 9.30am.
- 19 April – a talk by Jeremy Mynott on Shingle Street survey. Boyton Village Hall at 7.00pm.
- 23 April – a morning walk with the RSPB at Hollelsey Marshes Reserve. Meet at the car park at 9.30am.
- 20 May – a morning walk with the RSPB at Boyton Marshes Reserve. Meet at Banter’s Barn at 9.30am.
