Installation of Bird and Bat Boxes at Bawdsey Quay

The boxes
On Friday 26th February, a party of stalwart volunteers installed 34 bird and bat boxes at the amenity area site at Bawdsey Quay, overseen by Andrew Excell of the Suffolk Wildlife Trust. The boxes were individually sponsored by local people and by organisations within the village including Bawdsey Primary School, Bawdsey Bird Club, Bawdsey Market, Bawdsey Radar and the Village Hall and Recreation Ground Committee. Each box is clearly numbered and a map showing the position of all the boxes together with the sponsors will shortly be available.
The volunteers were joined by four pupils from Bawdsey Primary School who were shown by Andrew how to encourage birds into the boxes by putting dried leaves and moss in the bottom. Two additional owl boxes will shortly be installed. It is hoped to see all the boxes being inhabited in the coming season. All profits will go towards the project to build a new visitors’ centre on the site.
